Movie Review: "The Holiday", "Underdog", "Prairie Home Companion"

You must think I am a movie junkie. But actually these are several movies I've watched over the last week or two. I got one of those free subscriptions to Netflix and was trying to get my "money's worth". These are two movies that were sent to me, "The Holiday" and "A Prairie Home Companion".

"The Holiday" stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black, and Jude Law. Not a bad cast, too bad the script was so absolutely horrible! And I'm afraid the acting wasn't that great either. For me to criticize acting you know it had to be bad. Cameron Diaz was atrocious...come on, girl, I really like you! This was one of those movies that after 20 minutes I was ready to turn it off, drop it in its little envelope and get rid of it. Needless to say, don't waste your time on this movie even if it turns up on the TV for free...

"A Prairie Home Companion" has a great star cast - Garrison Keillor, Kevin Kline, Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Woody Harrelson, and others. Since I hadn't followed the radio show, this is a difficult movie to rate and maybe unfair too. This was another movie that wasn't worth the postage to my mailbox. I couldn't really follow it or understand what was going on. I mean I got the little stories within the big story, but I just didn't get the total picture. It was another movie I couldn't finish. This is really unusual for me since I have a serious problem of not being able to stop a movie...I have to see it to completion even if it is horrible. But this one I actually stopped. Again, maybe I am missing the radio history and am dense, but this one was a dud. As a side note, I would mention that it didn't get that great of ratings either, so it might not be "just me".

My workplace gave me 4 free tickets to the movies so I took my daughter to see "Underdog" starring Jim Belushi and the voice talent of Jason Lee. What a cute movie! No, it isn't Academy Award material, but a cute movie especially if you like adorable dogs, the original "Underdog" cartoon, and can sympathize for the underdog. I don't know if it got the greatest ratings but we liked it. The only complaint I had with the movie was the timeline of events. That part didn't make sense to me. How does the "villain" get blasted, the next day healed with scars, and then the next day have his underground laboratory set up? And the ending of the movie is pretty corny...but nonetheless it was a cute movie to watch with the kids.

Now, pass the popcorn, please! (Might I also rant that we didn't get popcorn and a pop at the movies...they wanted $11+! How outrageous is that?)
